Saved By The Bug: A Celebration of 30 Years of The Bug Theatre

The year was 1994. Six Friends first sat down for coffee at Central Perk, and Forest opened his box of chocolates. Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan dominated headlines at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, and Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa's first black president. A new company called Amazon made it easier to buy books from home. And on the corner of 37th and Navajo Street, some local artists discovered the bones of an old abandoned nickelodeon movie theater being used as an appliance storage warehouse. Together they worked to turn it into the nonprofit Bug Performance and Media Art Center, also known as The Bug Theatre, which became part of the burgeoning Navajo Street Arts District.

​Thirty years later, The Bug Theatre is home to a variety of performing arts, with monthly showcases featuring film, comedy, improv, story telling, and more, and regularly hosts live theatrical performances, touring acts, festivals, community meetings, and even a wedding every now and then. As a federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Bug continues to work towards its original mission to make the arts accessible to artists and audiences of all means, with both rental rates and ticket prices below the market “norm” for a space of its kind, providing the opportunity for "the development of unique voices, a diverse audience, and dynamic programming”.

Join us for a celebration of 30 Years of Bug on Saturday, October 19th, with a variety show featuring some of the many highlights from our first three decades! As part of our celebration we'll be running an online fundraiser silent auction from September 30th - October 18th, with all proceeds to benefit Bug Performance and Media Art Center.
